The Importance of Refractoriness

April 10, 2026

Refractoriness is the core index of refractory bricks to resist high-temperature softening and melting. It is the basis for measuring the high-temperature resistance of bricks and also the key to the safe and stable operation of high-temperature industries.

The refractoriness doesn’t represent the melting point of the material, but the temperature at which the material reaches the specified softening deformation under standard conditions. The higher the purity and the less the flux impurities, the higher the refractoriness.

In industries such as steel, cement, glass and metallurgy, refractoriness directly determines the upper limit of the service temperature and service life of the furnace lining. Insufficient refractoriness will easily cause the material to soften, collapse and suffer aggravated erosion, leading to furnace damage, shutdown for maintenance, and even safety accidents such as steel leakage and material leakage, which seriously affect the production continuity and product quality.

In practical applications, the refractoriness must be higher than the working temperature of the furnace, and match with properties such as load softening temperature, slag resistance and thermal shock stability to ensure long-term reliable use.
