Performance Characteristics and Application Analysis of Carbon-Free Bricks

October 16, 2026

As the steel industry raises higher quality requirements for clean steel and ultra-low carbon steel products, conventional magnesia carbon bricks tend to increase carbon pickup in molten steel and fail to meet some high-end smelting working conditions. For this reason, carbon-free bricks have gradually become an important option for metallurgical linings.

Carbon-free bricks take high-purity oxides such as corundum, magnesia and magnesia alumina spinel as the main raw materials. No carbon-containing components like graphite or carbon black are added during production. They are shaped and fired with composite binders. Their core advantage is that they don’t release carbon into molten steel in service, which effectively avoids the defect of carbon pickup in molten steel and guarantees the purity of steel products.

Compared with traditional magnesia carbon bricks, carbon-free bricks have lower thermal conductivity. They reduce heat loss from furnace bodies and deliver certain energy-saving effects. Meanwhile, they feature good resistance to slag erosion and slag penetration and can withstand erosion damage caused by molten slag. Limited by the material system, their thermal shock resistance is inferior to that of carbon containing refractory bricks. The industry commonly optimizes aggregate gradation and introduces ultrafine active powder to improve the internal microstructure, mitigate thermal shock spalling and extend overall service life.

Carbon-free bricks are mainly used in key areas including parts below the slag line of ladles, inner linings of refining ladles and continuous casting tundishes, suitable for smelting steel grades such as stainless steel and ultra-low carbon steel.

Our carbon-free bricks can provide customized formula solutions according to customers' different furnace working conditions. They effectively extend the service life of furnace linings, cut enterprise operation, maintenance and shutdown overhaul costs, and help the metallurgical industry achieve clean, efficient and low-cost production.
