During submerged arc welding, flux does more than form slag to shield the molten pool. Through metallurgical reactions between slag and molten metal, it transfers alloying elements into the weld, directly controlling core mechanical properties such as strength, ductility and impact toughness. This makes alloy design a critical part of agglomerated submerged arc welding flux formulation.
Manganese is the most common alloying component in flux. It acts as both a deoxidizer and desulfurizer. Dissolved in weld metal, manganese increases tensile and yield strength. It also converts harmful sulfur into lowmelting sulfides that enter the slag, lowering the risk of hot cracking. However, excessive manganese reduces the lowtemperature impact toughness of the weld.
Silicon mainly serves for deoxidation. A small amount of silicon cleans the weld, while excess silicon tends to form silicate inclusions and impairs ductility and toughness.
Nickel greatly improves the low-temperature toughness of welds and reduces the ductilebrittle transition temperature, making it suitable for lowtemperature service conditions such as pipelines and pressure vessels.
Chromium and molybdenum enhance weld strength and hightemperature performance for heatresistant components. Their addition must be strictly controlled, because overdosing easily produces brittle microstructures and reduces impact values.
Trace titanium forms dispersed inclusions, which act as nucleation sites for acicular ferrite and refine weld grains. This maintains good toughness even under high heat input welding.
The proportion of alloying elements must balance strength and toughness. Overreinforcement from any single element usually comes at the cost of ductility and toughness. With carefully engineered alloy systems, agglomerated submerged arc welding flux matches different base metals and working conditions to deliver stable, controllable weld mechanical performance. Proper adjustment of alloy components in flux minimizes weld inclusions and cracks, ensuring longterm operational reliability for welded structures including pressure vessels, steel frameworks and metallurgical equipment.
