Analysis of Spalling Causes for Ladle Nozzle Well Blocks

October 29, 2026

Ladle nozzle well blocks are critical refractories that control molten steel flow. They operate under harsh service conditions and are prone to spalling failure during use, which directly threatens the safety of continuous casting with ladles. Well block spalling is rarely caused by a single factor; the most common triggers include thermal stress, structural fit issues, material defects and improper operation.

Sharp temperature fluctuation is the primary cause. When a cold well block comes into direct contact with high-temperature molten steel, a huge temperature gradient forms inside the brick. The thermal stress generated by thermal expansion and contraction exceeds the material's strength limit, leading to cracking and spalling. Rapid heating, uneven temperature distribution and insufficient preheating all raise the risk of thermal shock damage.

Unreasonable clearances between the well block, surrounding lining bricks and nozzle can also result in spalling. If the clearance is too small, mutual expansion of different refractories at high temperature creates compression and cracks the block. If the clearance is too large, molten steel and slag penetrate into the gap and solidify to form a rigid clamp. Subsequent thermal expansion will tear the well block. Misalignment between the well block and nozzle during installation leads to concentrated local stress under molten steel impact during casting, which also initiates cracks.

Intrinsic material weaknesses can't be ignored either. Poor thermal shock resistance, insufficient high-temperature strength and high impurity content weaken its ability to withstand thermal shocks, making the block more vulnerable to damage and spalling under repeated intermittent casting cycles.

Besides, excessive molten steel temperature, severe slag erosion and fast ladle turnover continuously increase the load on the well block and accelerate crack propagation.

Proper preheating control, standardized assembly clearance and well blocks with excellent thermal shock resistance are effective ways to reduce spalling and extend service life.
